Iberia flight IB6252 from New York JFK to Madrid, operated by Airbus A350-900 registered EC-MYX, made an emergency landing at Boston Logan airport Tuesday night (11 September) due to an issue with one of its Roll-Royce Trent XWB engines, a spokeswoman for the airline said.

Ninety minutes into the flight, the aircraft with 265 passengers on board was already well over the Atlantic Ocean, flying at a cruising altitude of 39,000 feet, when the pilots made a U-turn, descended to FL250 and headed to the nearest large airport, Boston Logan.

The plane landed without incident and there were no injuries.

Shares in Rolls-Royce dropped as traders priced in the risk of issues with its Trent XWB engines. Rolls-Royce is still trying to solve the problems of its Trent 900 and 1000 engines equipping many Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, grounding dozens of aircraft throughout the world.

“We are aware of the issue and will be working closely with the airline to support them,” said a spokesman for Rolls-Royce to Reuters. “The Trent XWB has enjoyed the smoothest entry into service of any widebody engine and we continue to see the engine achieving market-leading levels of reliability.”
