The European Commission has issued a Statement of Objections to International Consolidated Airlines Group, S.A. (IAG), expressing preliminary concerns regarding IAG’s proposed acquisition of sole control over Air Europa Holding, S.L. The Commission’s investigation suggests that the acquisition may lead to reduced competition in the market for passenger air transport services, particularly for routes within, to, and from Spain.
The objections highlight potential adverse effects on competition, including increased prices and decreased service quality, in various segments of the air travel market. Despite IAG’s submission of commitments in February 2024 to address some concerns, the Commission deemed them insufficient.
IAG now has the opportunity to respond to the Statement of Objections and propose remedies until the deadline on June 10, 2024. The Commission aims to make a final decision on the matter by July 15, 2024.
This development underscores the Commission’s commitment to preserving effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) and safeguarding consumer interests in air travel. More details are available on the Commission’s competition website under case number M.11109.
