British Airways Airbus A320 declares “smoke in cabin” emergency minutes before landing at London Heathrow


In the morning of 23 September, a British Airways Airbus A320 (G-EUYB) operated flight BA709 between Zurich, Switzerland and London Heathrow, United Kingdom. The aircraft was established on the localizer of Heathrow’s runway 27L when the crew declared an emergency as smoke entered the aircraft’s cabin.

The aircraft continued for a safe landing on runway 27L about 4 minutes later, emergency services rushed to the aircraft. The aircraft vacated the runway and stopped on the parallel taxiway for about an hour. A number of passengers and cabin crew members required medical attention for smoke inhalation. British Airways cleared a lounge to accommodate the passengers of the aircraft and their relatives. The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in London about 12.5 hours after landing.
