India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has officially welcomed Willie Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking the beginning of a new chapter as the carrier pursues ambitious international expansion plans.
Walsh, whose appointment was announced in March, formally assumed the role on 3 August 2026. He succeeds at a pivotal time for IndiGo, which has grown into one of the world’s largest airlines and is rapidly expanding its long-haul and international operations.
With more than 40 years of aviation experience, Walsh will oversee the airline’s overall strategy, focusing on accelerating global growth, strengthening operational performance, expanding the network and enhancing the customer experience.
IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia said Walsh’s extensive international aviation experience would be invaluable as the airline enters its third decade.
“His extensive global experience in the aviation industry, combined with his operational and strategic expertise, will be instrumental as IndiGo accelerates its international expansion strategy,” Bhatia said.
Walsh described his appointment as an opportunity to build on IndiGo’s remarkable success.
“IndiGo has built a remarkable legacy over the last two decades, establishing itself amongst the largest airlines in the world in a short span of time,” he said. “With India becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, the opportunities ahead for IndiGo are immense.”
One of the aviation industry’s best-known executives, Walsh began his career as a pilot with Aer Lingus, later becoming the Irish carrier’s CEO in 2001. He subsequently led British Airways from 2005 to 2011 before becoming the founding Chief Executive Officer of International Airlines Group (IAG), where he oversaw the expansion of one of Europe’s largest airline groups between 2011 and 2020. Most recently, he served as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
His appointment comes as IndiGo continues its transformation from a predominantly domestic low-cost carrier into a global airline. The carrier is expanding its long-haul fleet, opening new intercontinental routes and strengthening partnerships with international airlines as it seeks to capitalise on the rapid growth of India’s aviation market.
As Chief Executive Officer, Walsh will work closely with the airline’s Board and senior leadership team to guide IndiGo through its next phase of development while reinforcing its position as India’s leading airline and an increasingly significant player on the global aviation stage.
