On May 21, 2025, IndiGo flight 6E2142, operating an Airbus A321 from New Delhi to Srinagar, encountered severe mid-air turbulence due to a sudden hailstorm. The aircraft, carrying 227 passengers, experienced intense shaking, leading the pilot to declare an emergency and alert Air Traffic Control in Srinagar.
Passengers described the experience as terrifying, with many screaming and praying as the aircraft was battered by hail and lightning. Videos circulating on social media (see below) capture the chaos inside the cabin, showing overhead bins rattling and visibly distressed passengers gripping their seats.
Despite the harrowing conditions, the flight landed safely at Srinagar Airport at approximately 6:30 PM local time. No injuries were reported. However, the aircraft sustained significant damage to its nose cone, leading IndiGo to declare it “Aircraft on Ground” (AOG), indicating it is temporarily unfit for service pending inspection and repairs.
In a statement, IndiGo confirmed the incident, stating that the crew followed all operational protocols and expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers due to the inclement weather.
