Pieter Elbers has resigned as chief executive of IndiGo following months of scrutiny after thousands of flight cancellations that stranded passengers across India.
The airline cancelled around 4,500 flights in December, the largest operational disruption in its 20-year history, after misjudging pilot availability following new duty and rest regulations. India’s aviation regulator later fined the carrier $2.45 million and criticised senior management for inadequate oversight.
IndiGo co-founder Rahul Bhatia will lead the airline on an interim basis while a new CEO is appointed, acknowledging internally that the December cancellations “should never have happened.”
Despite strong growth under Elbers—including a major order for 500 aircraft from Airbus—the airline has faced mounting pressure from the operational crisis, geopolitical disruptions affecting Middle East airspace, and a continuing airspace ban by Pakistan. IndiGo’s shares have fallen 13.5% this year amid the challenges.
