Record-high capacity growth in November, demand exceeded capacity growth in Asian, North-Atlantic and European Traffic
In November, Finnair’s overall capacity measured in Available Seat Kilometres increased by 20.0 percent year‐on‐year, and traffic measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres grew by 23.7 percent. The number of passengers carried in November increased by 15 percent year-on-year. The passenger load factor increased by 2.3 percentage points to 78.4 percent.
The capacity in Finnair’s largest traffic area, Asia, increased by 32.5 percent in November. A new seasonal route to Goa was opened in November, and flights to Phuket were started earlier than in the comparison period. Also, the number of frequencies to Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore and Krabi increased year-on-year. Traffic measured in RPK grew by 34.5 percent, and the passenger load factor increased by 1.2 percentage points to 80.6 percent.
In North Atlantic, traffic capacity increased by 19.1 percent. Flights to new leisure destination Puerto Vallarta started and Miami route was re-opened in November, whereas operations to Chicago ceased for the winter period. Traffic increased by 25.0 percent and the passenger load factor rose by 3.6 percentage points to 75.5 percent.
Finnair’s capacity in European traffic increased by 5.6 percent reflecting added capacity especially to Berlin, Copenhagen, Moscow, St. Petersburg and Vilnius. Traffic measured in RPK grew by 10.8 percent year-on-year. The passenger load factor increased by 3.6 percentage points to 77.5 percent. Domestic capacity increased by 11.2 percent and traffic by 8.5 percent. The passenger load factor decreased by 1.6 percentage points to 64.3 percent.
Available Scheduled Cargo Tonne Kilometres increased by 16.4 percent and Revenue Scheduled Cargo Tonne Kilometres increased by 23.1 percent. The strongest growth markets year-on-year were Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Korea and Germany. Finnair’s total cargo capacity also included three weekly freighter flights between Helsinki and Brussels, operated by DHL. Finnair Cargo’s agreement to rent cargo space Japan Airlines’ daily flights between Tokyo and Helsinki ended at the end of October, which was reflected cargo flights volumes in November.
In November, 81.6 percent of all Finnair flights arrived on schedule (75.9).
