FedEx has returned parts of its McDonnell Douglas MD-11F fleet to service following a six-month grounding triggered by a fatal freighter accident involving a UPS aircraft last year.

Test flights confirm phased return

Two MD-11F aircraft resumed operations in early May, according to flight tracking data:

  • Aircraft N621FE completed a short test flight from Memphis, followed by a Memphis–Miami sector
  • Aircraft N521FE conducted multiple flights, including Memphis–Los Angeles operations

The flights suggest a gradual, controlled return to service following extended inspections and regulatory oversight.

Why the fleet was grounded

The grounding followed a fatal accident on 4 November involving a UPS MD-11F, which prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to issue an Emergency Airworthiness Directive requiring operators to inspect key structural components of the aircraft.

The investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board focused on a failure in the aft mount assembly connecting the left engine pylon to the wing. Evidence of fatigue cracking was identified in structural elements, raising concerns about long-term integrity under stress.

Operational and financial impact

The grounding created significant operational pressure for FedEx, contributing to an estimated $120 million hit to operating income in its fiscal third quarter, with additional losses expected in the following quarter.

Industry divergence on MD-11F future

While FedEx is reintroducing the aircraft gradually, competitor UPS has already retired its MD-11F fleet and is replacing it with newer Boeing 767 Freighter aircraft. Other operators, including Western Global Airlines, have also parked their remaining MD-11Fs.

Broader context

The MD-11F remains a niche aircraft, representing a small share of global cargo capacity, with most of its usage concentrated on domestic and regional routes rather than long-haul international operations.
