Ethiopian Airlines has inaugurated a new airport in Yabello, southern Oromia, marking a major step in strengthening Ethiopia’s domestic aviation network. Built at a cost of over 1 billion ETB, the facility includes a new airfield, access roads, supporting infrastructure, and a temporary terminal.
Located 11 km from Yabello Town in Borena Zone, the airport is expected to improve accessibility, stimulate trade, tourism, and investment, and provide vital connectivity to communities previously reliant on road transport.
At the opening ceremony, attended by government and community leaders, Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew described the project as transformative for the region and part of the carrier’s broader strategy to expand aviation infrastructure across Ethiopia.
The Yabello airport adds to Ethiopian Airlines’ growing domestic footprint, complementing the government’s push to reduce regional disparities and enhance transport links between rural areas and major cities. It also supports the airline’s wider growth strategy, alongside its multi-hub expansion across Africa and a global network serving over 160 destinations.
Industry experts highlight that the new airport will not only strengthen passenger services but also support cargo operations, emergency services, and economic development in southern Ethiopia.
