Ethiopian Airlines is set to deepen its long-running partnership with Boeing after committing to purchase 11 additional 737 MAX aircraft, the companies announced at the Dubai Airshow.
The order for 11 Boeing 737-8 jets will support the carrier’s plan to expand both regional and international operations from its Addis Ababa hub. Africa’s largest airline already operates the continent’s biggest Boeing fleet and holds the largest Boeing backlog, including 737 MAX, 777X and 787 Dreamliner aircraft.
“We are thrilled to announce this agreement for additional 737-8 airplanes,” said Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew. “The order will support our growth plans and reflects the strength of our partnership with Boeing. We look forward to flying Boeing aircraft for years to come while providing customers with high-performance airplanes offering comfort and reliability.”
The airline employs its 737 MAX fleet on high-frequency routes across Africa, the Middle East, India and Southern Europe, where efficiency and fast turnarounds are critical.
Boeing senior vice president Brad McMullen said the commitment reinforces Ethiopian Airlines’ leadership in African aviation. “We are proud our efficient and versatile airplanes will continue to support the airline’s growth as it further connects Africa with the world.”
The agreement adds momentum to an 80-year relationship between the manufacturer and the Ethiopian flag carrier, which continues to invest heavily in next-generation Boeing jets to meet rising demand.
