Ethiopian Airlines marked its 80th anniversary on April 8, 2026, launching a series of celebrations to commemorate eight decades of operations and growth.
Founded in 1946 with just five Douglas C-47 aircraft and an initial route to Cairo via Asmara, the airline has evolved into Africa’s largest carrier by fleet size, destinations, revenue, and passenger numbers. Over the years, it has built a reputation as a technological leader on the continent, consistently introducing modern aircraft into its fleet.
CEO Mesfin Tasew highlighted the airline’s role in connecting Africa to the world, emphasising its Pan-African identity and contribution to economic and regional integration.
The anniversary celebrations were officially launched at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel and will continue with further events, marking a major milestone not only for the airline but for African aviation as a whole.
