Why Emirates postponed the much expected Airbus A380 order

Emirates stunned the aviation and business world by not ordering more Airbus A380s at the Dubai air show. Instead, the Gulf’s largest carrier decided to commit to 40 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner aircraft from Airbus’ main rival, a deal valued at $15.1 billion at current list prices.

Emirates CEO Tim Clark told CNBC on Monday that he wouldn’t rule out buying more Airbus A380s in the future, but he wants Airbus to keep the production line going.

Keeping the A380 production line over the next ten to fifteen years is vital to us.

Also, Airbus is expected to buy back or find new homes for some of the older A380s currently operated by Emirates, as it finalizes a deal to sell 36-38 new A380s to the carrier at the Dubai Airshow.
