Emirates to ban power bank use onboard after safety incidents

From 1 October 2025, Emirates will prohibit the use of power banks on its flights, citing safety risks linked to lithium battery overheating and fires. Passengers may carry one power bank under 100 Wh, but it must remain unused, cannot be charged from the aircraft’s power supply, and must be stored in a seat pocket or under the seat, not in overhead bins or checked baggage.

The move follows a rise in global lithium battery incidents, including a KLM flight from Brazil this week, where an overheating power bank filled the cabin with smoke. Similar events in Asia have led airlines such as Air Busan, Singapore Airlines, and China Airlines to tighten rules.

Emirates says restricting use and keeping power banks accessible will allow crew to respond quickly in emergencies, reinforcing its commitment to passenger safety.
