An Emirates Boeing 777-300ER registered A6-EPG, operating flight EK35 from Dubai to Newcastle, declared a mid-air emergency and diverted to Edinburgh after aborting its approach to Newcastle. The aircraft circled over the Newcastle and Sunderland area and made two unsuccessful landing attempts before the crew squawked the 7700 emergency code, indicating a general or urgent situation.
Flight tracking data shows the aircraft subsequently headed north and landed safely at Edinburgh Airport. The 7700 code can be used for a range of issues, including technical or medical emergencies, enabling air traffic control and emergency services to respond appropriately.
Edinburgh Airport confirmed the diverted aircraft landed without incident. Newcastle Airport declined to comment, and Emirates has been approached for a statement.
After 2 hours on the ground in Edinburgh, the aircraft resumed its flight to Newcastle, where it landed with a delay of 3 hours and a quarter.
