El Al has announced plans to significantly expand its widebody fleet by exercising an option to purchase six additional Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, with the possibility of acquiring up to six more in the future.
The order includes additional Boeing 787-9 jets, while some existing orders will be upgraded to the larger Boeing 787-10, which can accommodate around 310 passengers. If all options are exercised, El Al’s Dreamliner fleet could grow to approximately 34 aircraft, marking a notable expansion beyond its previously stated target of 28 by the end of the decade.
The airline currently operates 17 Dreamliners, which already form the backbone of its long-haul network, serving key destinations in North America, Asia and Europe. The expansion is aimed at increasing seat capacity, improving flight availability and supporting future network growth, particularly on intercontinental routes.
According to the airline, the 787-9 offers a range of up to 16.5 hours, while the 787-10 can operate flights of up to 15.5 hours, depending on load and operating conditions.
Chief Executive Levy Halevy described the move as a “focused investment” designed to enhance both customer experience and operational efficiency, while Chairman Amikam Ben Zvi emphasised the strategic importance of building a modern, competitive fleet centred around advanced long-haul aircraft.
While the fleet expansion signals continued growth ambitions, the airline has not yet disclosed specific new routes or product changes tied to the additional aircraft.
