Eastern Airways collapses into liquidation after rescue talks fail

Share

UK regional carrier Eastern Airways has entered liquidation after a last-minute collapse of a key commercial contract triggered the end of operations. The airline, founded in 1997 and based at Humberside Airport, had been operating domestic services across northern England and Scotland, plus a route to London Gatwick.

The immediate shutdown followed the cancellation of a contract with KLM Cityhopper, under which Eastern Airways was expected to operate four aircraft on behalf of the Dutch carrier. After the agreement fell through, the airline suspended all flights on 27 October, informing passengers that operations were cancelled.

Administrators from RSM were appointed shortly afterwards, but despite ongoing discussions with potential investors, a rescue deal ultimately failed to materialise. The carrier had reportedly attracted multiple bids, including interest in reviving its operations due to its regional network and brand recognition, but none progressed to completion.

Around 290 employees—including pilots, cabin crew and administrative staff—have lost their jobs as a result of the collapse. While there had been consideration of a restructuring or sale of assets that could have enabled a future restart under a new owner, administrators have now confirmed that liquidation proceedings will proceed and remaining assets will be sold.

The airline’s sudden failure underscores the fragility of regional carriers dependent on thin margins and key subcontracting agreements, particularly when major partnership deals are withdrawn at short notice.
