DHL Express has launched its first direct flight between Bahrain and South Africa, creating a new link between its Middle Eastern and sub-Saharan African networks.
The weekly service is operated by a Boeing 767 freighter to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport. It provides additional inbound and outbound capacity for South Africa and neighbouring countries through DHL’s Johannesburg hub, while improving the company’s ability to handle heavier shipments.
DHL says the route will support growing trade between Africa and the Gulf, particularly in healthcare, technology, manufacturing and cross-border e-commerce. It also reflects the diversification of global supply chains beyond traditional trade corridors.
Bahrain will connect Johannesburg with DHL’s wider aviation network, including major global hubs such as Hong Kong, Leipzig and Cincinnati. The company sees South Africa as an increasingly important market in global trade, with Johannesburg serving as a key gateway for its regional operations.
