A Delta Air Lines flight was forced to return to William P. Hobby Airport shortly after departure early Wednesday due to an unruly passenger.
Flight DL2557 (Boeing 717-200 reg. N935AT) was en route from Houston Hobby to Atlanta when concerns were raised about a male passenger’s behaviour. Initial reports suggested the individual attempted to breach the cockpit. However, Delta clarified that no cockpit intrusion occurred. The airline stated the passenger exhibited “unruly and unlawful behaviour toward other customers.”
Houston police responded to reports of a possible cockpit breach and detained one male passenger after the aircraft returned. Authorities indicated there were no reported injuries.
The flight subsequently departed again and arrived in Atlanta approximately 90 minutes behind schedule. Delta did not disclose further details regarding the nature of the disruption.
The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed it will investigate the incident.
The case comes amid ongoing concerns about passenger misconduct. In 2025, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy launched a national air travel civility campaign, noting that the FAA recorded a 400% increase in in-flight disturbances since 2019 and approximately 13,800 unruly passenger incidents since 2021.
