Delta Air Lines flight DL56 from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam (Airbus A330-900neo registered N422DZ) was diverted to Minneapolis on Wednesday after encountering severe turbulence mid-flight.
The Airbus A330, carrying 275 passengers and 13 crew, landed safely, but 25 passengers were hospitalised for observation and care. Emergency services met the aircraft upon arrival. The extent of injuries and nationalities of those affected have not been disclosed.
One passenger said people who weren’t wearing seat belts were thrown about the cabin. “They hit the ceiling, and then they fell to the ground,” Leann Clement-Nash told ABC News. “And the carts also hit the ceiling and fell to the ground and people were injured. It happened several times, so it was really scary.”
The continuation of the flight to Amsterdam has been cancelled or postponed. The return flight from Amsterdam has also been cancelled.
