Passengers aboard a Delta Air Lines Boeing 757-200 (tail number N555NW) were evacuated using emergency slides at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Saturday morning after the crew reported fumes in the flight deck shortly after takeoff.
Delta flight DL2204, bound for Orlando with approximately 200 passengers and six crew members, departed Atlanta shortly before 07:30 local time before turning back after the pilots declared an emergency.
The aircraft landed safely at around 08:00 and subsequently stopped on a taxiway, where the crew initiated an evacuation. Emergency slides were deployed and passengers left the aircraft before being transported by bus back to the terminal.
Delta said the flight crew followed established procedures after receiving reports of fumes in the cockpit. One passenger and one crew member sought medical attention following the incident.
Passengers were being reaccommodated on another aircraft to continue their journey to Orlando, while the Boeing 757 was taken out of service for a maintenance inspection.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the aircraft landed safely and said it would investigate the incident.
