A Delta Air Lines Boeing 737-900 (N932DZ) returned to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport shortly after takeoff Sunday evening following a left-engine failure that ignited a grass fire alongside the runway.
Flight DL1067, bound for Atlanta, departed around 18:45 before the crew declared an emergency. Air traffic control recordings indicate the left engine “blew,” with flames reportedly visible during takeoff. The incident triggered a significant grass fire near the taxiway, prompting controllers to halt other aircraft movements while fire crews responded.
The aircraft landed safely at 19:12 and was met by emergency vehicles. All 179 passengers and six crew members deplaned at the gate without injury.
Local emergency services—including Garden City Fire Rescue, Savannah Fire Department, Pooler Fire-Rescue, and the 165th Airlift Wing Fire Department—assisted in containing the fire.
The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the incident.
