A Dana Air McDonnell Douglas MD-83 (5N-SRI) has overshot the runway at Port Harcourt Airport (Nigeria) on Tuesday (20 February), the aircraft originated from Abuja, Nigeria as 9J-0363. The aircraft is currently situated near the runway, passengers had to use the emergency chutes to evacuate the aircraft. No fatalities have been reported.
The regional airline has a doubtful safety record: following a fatal air crash in 2012 its licence was suspended. It was restored in September 2012 by the Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Authority before the inquiry into the accident was concluded. In October 2013, the airline’s licence was once again suspended. The airline was audited and resumed flights on 26 January 2014 with a single Boeing 737-500. The airline currently has 5 McDonnell Douglas MD-83 and 1 McDonnell Douglas MD-82 in its fleet (Planespotters.net).
“The incident was suspected to have been caused by a heavy rain, which was accompanied by strong wind and storm in Port Harcourt.”
“No casualty was recorded, as all passengers on board were safely evacuated.”
