On June 15, 2025, Romanian carrier DAN AIR launched regular Bucharest–Damascus flights, becoming the only EU airline operating commercial services to Syria. This milestone follows bilateral agreements and official approval from both Romanian and Syrian authorities.

The airline will operate four weekly flights using 180-seat Airbus A320s, with strong early demand. DAN AIR will also expand service with Damascus–Berlin flights via Bucharest starting July 1.

The move is being positioned as a strategic signal to encourage broader EU-Syria engagement, aiming to strengthen economic and cultural ties, particularly benefiting Syrian communities in Romania and Germany.

The inaugural flight was piloted by Captain Cristina Preda, the first woman in Europe to serve as Director of Flight Operations.
