Boeing and Copa Airlines have announced a major fleet deal for 40 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, with options for up to 20 additional jets, as the airline accelerates growth across the Americas.
The order will support Copa’s plan to expand and modernise its all-737 fleet over the next eight years, reinforcing its hub strategy in Panama City.
Strengthening a single-type fleet strategy
Copa already operates more than 110 aircraft from the 737 family, including next-generation models and freighters. The new Boeing 737 MAX jets will enhance efficiency, range and capacity while maintaining fleet commonality—a key factor in controlling costs and simplifying operations.
The airline expects to grow its total 737 MAX fleet to over 100 aircraft, enabling further network expansion across North, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean.
Supporting hub expansion
The aircraft will be deployed through Copa’s “Hub of the Americas” in Panama City, a major connecting point linking 88 destinations in 32 countries. The additional capacity is expected to strengthen regional connectivity and support tourism and economic growth.
CEO Pedro Heilbron said the order is a “key step” in expanding operations and meeting demand, while Boeing’s commercial aircraft chief Stephanie Pope highlighted the long-standing partnership between the two companies.
Regional demand outlook
According to Boeing forecasts, Latin America and the Caribbean will require more than 2,300 new aircraft over the next 20 years, with single-aisle jets like the 737 MAX accounting for the vast majority of deliveries.
The deal underscores continued strong demand for narrowbody aircraft as airlines prioritise efficiency and network flexibility in a competitive and cost-sensitive market.
