President Félix Tshisekedi is facing continued challenges in efforts to revive the national carrier Congo Airways, amid mounting concerns over governance, finances, and operational viability.
In December 2025, Tshisekedi ordered a detailed investigation into the causes of the airline’s collapse and tasked a dedicated team with drafting a comprehensive recovery plan. However, during a cabinet meeting on 20 March, he expressed dissatisfaction, stating that recent reports indicate the airline still suffers from serious structural issues that threaten any sustainable turnaround.
The president warned that the worsening situation could expose the state, as shareholder, to significant legal, financial, and reputational risks. He also stressed the need for full transparency regarding fleet renewal initiatives, including aircraft acquisitions linked to state-related financial entities.
Tshisekedi instructed senior government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Jean-Pierre Bemba, to develop an updated and financially sound recovery plan. This plan should include stronger internal controls, regulatory compliance, auditing mechanisms, and improved personnel management, alongside regular reporting to the state.
Despite previous efforts to restructure the airline, including plans to acquire A320 aircraft and restore operational certifications, Congo Airways continues to face uncertainty. The government had previously managed to avoid the loss of key accreditations after a temporary moratorium, but long-term stability remains unresolved.
Tshisekedi emphasized that any recovery strategy must be grounded in robust governance and performance-driven management to ensure the airline’s long-term viability and protect the state’s strategic interests.
