Competition for the airlines: the Austrian railway ÖBB plans a night train from Vienna to Brussels from January

From January 2020, the ÖBB is planning a night train from Vienna to Brussels. One year later, a direct night service to Amsterdam is to follow, said ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä in an interview with the “Wiener Zeitung“.

The ÖBB also tries to introduce a Railjet to Trieste, but since the routes are awarded for next year, the earliest will be in one year.

The railways are clearly coming back into favour after the “flight shame” movement launched by environmentalists all over Europe. Strangely enough, the ÖBB night trains have an aircraft-like name: “NightJet”.
