China Airlines has finalised an order for 14 Boeing 777X aircraft—10 777-9s and four 777-8 Freighters—with options for five additional 777-9s and four more freighters, marking the first 777X order from a Taiwanese carrier. The firm order, booked in March 2025 and previously listed as unidentified, positions the airline to optimise both passenger and cargo operations on intercontinental routes.
The 777-9s will replace older widebodies and provide 20% greater fuel efficiency and emissions reduction compared to previous-generation aircraft. Configured to carry 426 passengers in a two-class layout, the type supports CAL’s long-haul expansion to North America and Europe. Meanwhile, the 777-8F will complement CAL’s existing freighter fleet, offering 747-class payloads with 30% improved fuel economy and a 60% smaller noise footprint.
A long-time Boeing customer operating 777-300ERs and 747-400Fs, China Airlines is aligning its fleet renewal strategy with sustainability and operational efficiency goals. The 777X family’s platform commonality and performance will enable streamlined integration alongside CAL’s upcoming 787 Dreamliners.
This order brings total global commitments for the 777X program to over 520 units, reinforcing its long-term role in the large twin-aisle market.
