New China–Poland connection strengthens Katowice’s position as a key European logistics hub

A Boeing 777F operated by Central Airlines touched down at Katowice Wojciech Korfanty International Airport for the first time today, marking the launch of regular cargo flights between Chengdu (China) and Katowice. The new route — serving major Chinese e-commerce platforms — will operate three to five times per week.

Artur Tomasik, President of the Upper Silesian Aviation Group (GTL S.A.), hailed the event as “a big success” and a testament to Katowice’s growing appeal for Asian logistics operators:

“We are open to cooperation with Chinese logistics partners. Katowice offers state-of-the-art cargo infrastructure, a strategic location near key European motorways, and fast customs clearance thanks to excellent coordination with handling agents and the National Revenue Administration.”

Central Airlines CEO Wang Yingming added:

“As an important air carrier between China and Europe, Central Airlines is proud to add Katowice to our network. We look forward to growing together with the airport.”

A Rapidly Expanding Cargo Hub

Katowice Airport is Poland’s leading regional airport for commercial air cargo and expects a record 45,000 tonnes of freight in 2025. Its 12,000 m² cargo terminal and adjacent apron enable simultaneous handling of multiple large freighters.

Thanks to the IOOS H7 customs clearance system, tens of thousands of shipments from a single all-cargo flight can be processed in 6–7 hours — among the fastest turnaround times in Europe. The airport also operates 24/7 without restrictions, providing critical flexibility for global freight carriers.

Future Growth

As part of its 2024–2032 expansion plan, GTL S.A. will construct a second cargo terminal (10,000 m²), with completion planned for 2027.

Central Airlines at a Glance

Founded in 2020, Central Airlines operates five Boeing 777F aircraft, connecting 52 airports in 18 countries across Europe and North America.

With this new Chengdu–Katowice link, both partners aim to enhance trade connectivity between China and Central Europe, reinforcing Katowice’s status as a strategic hub for the fast-growing e-commerce logistics sector.
