Brussels Airlines celebrated a major milestone in its fleet renewal programme on Thursday, marking the arrival of its eighth Airbus A320neo during an event attended by senior government officials, aviation executives and industry stakeholders at the airline’s headquarters.
The new aircraft completes the first phase of Brussels Airlines’ narrowbody fleet modernisation programme, which is designed
to improve operational efficiency while significantly reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared with previous-generation aircraft. A new batch of five A320neo aircraft will be delivered to Brussels Airlines, starting about 18 months from now.
The afternoon began with a reception, providing an opportunity for representatives from the airline, the aviation sector and public authorities to meet and exchange views on the future of air transport in Belgium and Europe. Airbus had a small stand where an impressive video was featured, showing in vivo the noise reduction between the initial Airbus A300, the first A320ceo developed 40 years ago and the current A320neo.
Two keynote speeches followed, featuring Brussels Airlines CEO Dorothea von Boxberg and Flemish Minister-President Matthias Diependaele. Flemish Minister for Environment and Agriculture Jo Brouns, Airbus Belgium Head and Head of Public Affairs EU & NATO Reinout van Tuyll van Serooskerken, and Brussels Airport Company CEO Arnaud Feist joined Dorothea von Boxberg for a panel discussion.
The speakers highlighted the importance of continued investment in modern aircraft as the aviation industry works towards lower emissions and reduced noise while maintaining connectivity and competitiveness. The discussions also focused on fleet renewal, sustainability and the long-term outlook for aviation in Belgium and across Europe.
Guests were subsequently invited to inspect the airline’s newest Airbus A320neo, registered OO-SBH, which symbolises Brussels Airlines’ ongoing investment in a younger, more fuel-efficient fleet. The aircraft represents another step in the carrier’s strategy to modernise its operations while enhancing environmental performance.
The event underlined the close cooperation between Brussels Airlines, Airbus, Brussels Airport and public authorities in supporting the sustainable development of Belgian aviation.
