Bridges Air Cargo launches operations with first Embraer E190 converted freighter

Share

Cargo operator Bridges Air Cargo has begun commercial operations with the first Embraer E190F, marking the entry into service of the type in Europe.

The aircraft completed its first commercial flight on 9 March 2026, operating from Cologne, Germany, to Larnaca, Cyprus, carrying time-sensitive express shipments. The freighter will operate for Bridges Worldwide, providing network solutions for the express logistics sector across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Launch customer for Embraer’s E-Freighter

The aircraft is part of the E-Freighter programme developed by Embraer, which converts regional passenger jets into dedicated cargo aircraft through a passenger-to-freighter (P2F) conversion process.

According to Guy Bridges, CEO of the Bridges Group, the company spent the past year developing a specialised container system and handling procedures to support the aircraft’s operations. The E190F is expected to play a key role in transporting 8 to 12 tonnes of express cargo across the company’s regional network.

Bridges Air Cargo operates under its own air operator certificate registered in Malta, providing a platform for expanding E190F operations.

Partnership with Regional One

The programme is supported by aircraft leasing and investment firm Regional One, which partnered with Embraer to expand the freighter conversion programme. In 2025, Regional One doubled its order for converted aircraft from two to four units.

Designed for e-commerce logistics

The E190F was developed to address growing demand from e-commerce and express logistics operators, particularly for routes linking secondary and tertiary markets.

Compared with large turboprop cargo aircraft, the converted E-Jet offers over 40% more cargo volume and three times the range, while delivering up to 30% lower operating costs than larger narrowbody freighters. The aircraft has a maximum structural payload of 13,500 kilograms, combining cargo capacity on both the main deck and underfloor compartments.
