Bordeaux Airport: +8.6% growth in traffic in May, a good month to travel, especially to Brussels

Share

An even more positive summer season for traffic at Bordeaux Airport with +8.6% growth in overall passenger traffic and 6% in the first 5 months of the year. Boosted by an increased offering from Bordeaux (13 new routes in 2015), international destinations attracted more than 250,000 passengers in May, +15.4% compared to last year. Low-cost traffic rose by +13.1%, once again justifying extension work to the Billi terminal at the opening of the new “Arrivals” area.

International flights were up +16.2% in May. Brussels retained its leading position, growing thanks to the new Brussels Airlines offering, which complements the easyJet offering (+62.1%). Milan Malpensa served by easyJet also experienced strong growth in traffic (+47.3%) with the start of the international trade fair Expo Milano on 1st May. Sunny destinations showed solid momentum ahead of the peak summer season: Venice (+39.6%), Heraklion (+20.4%), Lisbon (+20.8%), Madrid (+19.8%), Tenerife (+17%) and Tunis (+10.3%).

The Air France/KLM international hubs, Paris Charles-de-Gaulle and Amsterdam, held their own with strong growth of +12.1% and +32.6% respectively (Amsterdam served by KLM and easyJet).

A special mention for the new 2015 destinations: Malaga rose by +182% with the arrival of Vueling adding to the offering of Volotea, and Prague with the first full month of operation by Volotea hosting 1,627 passengers.

Domestic traffic returned to a positive trend with +1.7% and 243.885 passengers. Corsica took off with the onset of fine weather: Figari served by Volotea posted phenomenal growth of +83.3% compared to last year. Ajaccio (+20.3%) and Bastia (+5.8%) also benefitted from this upward turn. Paris-Orly fell by 1.4% due to the lower seat offering (-10.4%). Strasbourg with Hop! and Volotea posted traffic growth of +24.2%, making it the top growth destination in France.

Low-cost traffic experienced a very positive month of May with +13.2% and 224.638 passengers. The airline Volotea reaped the benefits of the opening of routes to Brest, Prague, Dubrovnik and Corfu in April and posted a remarkable increase in traffic (+53.8%) in May. The airline easyJet also achieved very strong growth across almost all its network (+15.5%), with very positive results for Lille, Nice, Lisbon and Milan, among others.
