Boeing has officially kicked off production of its 777-8 Freighter, the industry’s newest and largest twin-engine cargo aircraft, with the first spar drilling at the 777X Composite Spar Shop in Everett.

This milestone marks the start of major assembly for the aircraft, which has received 59 orders since its 2022 launch. The first delivery is targeted for 2028.

Highlights

  • Wing spars measure 108 feet (32.92 metres) and are made from 392 miles (631 km) of carbon fibre tape, weighing 2,500 pounds (1134 kg) per pair.
  • Components were fabricated at Boeing’s nearby Composite Wing Center.
  • The 777-8F is part of the 777X family, alongside the 777-8 and 777-9 passenger variants.

Veteran employees like Robin Thorning, who helped build the original 777, called the moment both personal and historic. Boeing leaders emphasised the freighter’s role in building a safer, more efficient future for air cargo.

The first full wing assembly will begin soon as spars and components move to the main factory.
