The European Commission has agreed to extend the deadline for the sale of a majority stake in Azores Airlines to the end of 2026, granting Portugal and the Azores regional government additional time to complete the restructuring of airline group SATA.
At Portugal’s request, Brussels approved postponing until 31 December 2026 the obligation for SATA to divest 51% of Azores Airlines and proceed with the carve-out and sale of its ground handling business. The extension follows the group’s failure to complete the sale in 2025, as originally planned.
The divestment is a key condition attached to the €453.24 million state aid package approved by the European Commission in June 2022, following SATA’s severe financial losses and risk of insolvency. Brussels required the sale to limit distortions of competition while ensuring the airline’s long-term viability.
Azores Airlines plays a critical role in maintaining air connectivity between the Azores, mainland Portugal, and the rest of Europe. The Commission stated that the revised timeline reflects the practical difficulties encountered during the sale process, while maintaining the core commitments of the restructuring plan.
The extension provides SATA with additional breathing space to attract investors and complete its restructuring, but the requirement to divest a majority stake remains unchanged as a cornerstone of EU approval for the bailout.
