Asiana Airlines flight OZ745 from Seoul Incheon to Hong Kong (Airbus A350-900 reg. HL8308) landed safely on Thursday evening after a passenger’s portable powerbank caught fire mid-flight, injuring one person.
The aircraft, carrying 284 passengers, departed Incheon International Airport at 20:00 local time. Just over two hours into the flight, a portable charging device belonging to a passenger ignited inside the cabin.
Cabin crew responded immediately, using a fire extinguisher to contain and extinguish the fire within one to two minutes. The passenger who owned the device sustained minor burns to the hand, while no other passengers or crew members were injured.
Asiana Airlines confirmed that the situation was quickly brought under control and did not require an emergency diversion. The aircraft continued to Hong Kong as planned and landed safely at Hong Kong International Airport shortly after 22:30.
The incident underscores ongoing safety concerns related to lithium-ion battery-powered devices onboard aircraft, an issue that continues to attract close attention from airlines and aviation regulators worldwide.
