A Soviet-era Antonov An-24 passenger aircraft operated by Angara Airlines has crashed near Tynda, in Russia’s Amur region. The aircraft, flying domestic route Khaborovsk – Blagoveshchensk – Tynda, disappeared from radar on Wednesday, July 24, and lost all radio contact shortly after attempting to land.

According to emergency services cited by Russian news agency Interfax, the aircraft failed to check in with air traffic control during its final approach and went missing a few kilometers from Tynda Airport.

Initial reports varied, but authorities later confirmed there were 49 people on board, including 43 passengers (among them five children) and six crew members.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) launched a search-and-rescue operation in the remote area of Priamurye. According to information shared by RBC and Baza, the aircraft disappeared from radar after performing a go-around maneuver, failing to land on its first attempt.

Wreckage of the aircraft has since been located approximately 15 kilometers from Tynda. Rescuers on the scene reported finding the burning fuselage of the An-24.

The Eastern Siberian and Baikal-Angarsk transport prosecutors have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the accident and to check compliance with aviation safety regulations.

The An-24 is a twin turboprop aircraft that first flew in the 1960s and continues to serve regional routes in parts of Russia and Central Asia, despite its age and limited modern avionics.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the number of casualties. More information is expected as rescue teams reach the site and assess the situation.
