On 11 October, an American Airlines Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (N814AA) from Dallas to Beijing as AA263 was forced to make a diversion to Edmonton due to a passenger in medical distress. The pilots, however, encountered a flaps and slats issue during approach to Edmonton and decided to head to Calgary but not before dumping some fuel to reduce its landing weight.
During the approach to Edmonton the pilots encountered the flap failure, they immediately cancelled their approach and declared a “mayday emergency“. After the decision to head to Calgary – a longer runway -, the pilots dumped some fuel to further reduce the landing weight. Emergency services awaited the aircraft, all 222 passengers safely left the aircraft.
Passengers will spend the night in Calgary and continue their journey tomorrow. American Airlines confirmed that a rescue flight is planned from Dallas as AA9647, on a sister Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft (N807AA).
