American Airlines is expanding its long-haul network with plans to launch direct flights to Porto, Portugal (OPO), in summer 2027, subject to government approval. The new service will further strengthen the airline’s Southern Europe offering and underline the strategic role of its newest long-range narrowbody aircraft.
The route will operate as a daily, summer-seasonal service from Philadelphia (PHL) and will be flown by the Airbus A321XLR, featuring American’s latest Flagship Suite® premium cabin.
“Porto is exactly the type of new market the Airbus A321XLR enables us to serve,” said Brian Znotins, Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning, speaking at the airline’s annual leadership conference. He added that more long-haul route announcements for summer 2027 are expected later this year, building on recent additions such as Budapest and Prague, which launch this summer.
With year-round service already in place to Lisbon, Porto becomes a complementary destination in Portugal, targeting the growing demand for leisure travel to the country.
Porto offers a mix of cultural heritage and lifestyle appeal, from its historic riverfront and iconic azulejos tiles to its globally renowned port wine cellars. Nearby, the Douro Valley provides vineyard tours, river cruises and archaeological sites, reinforcing the region’s attractiveness for extended summer travel.
Onboard the A321XLR, American will offer 20 Flagship Suite® seats, each with a privacy door and enhanced comfort features. From 2026, all long-haul Flagship® Business flights will include new mattress pads, alongside premium bedding, Bang & Olufsen noise-cancelling headphones, branded slippers, a duvet and an upgraded amenity kit.
Travellers departing from Philadelphia will also benefit from American’s recently opened Flagship® Lounge, a 12,500-square-foot space with panoramic views, chef-driven dining, a full-service bar, spa-style showers and multiple seating zones.
In addition to Flagship Suite®, the Porto flights will offer Premium Economy and Main Cabin seating. Premium Economy passengers can expect enhanced headrests, leg and foot supports and wireless charging, while all customers will enjoy hot meals and complimentary seatback entertainment with Bluetooth connectivity.
The Porto announcement highlights the role of the A321XLR in American’s network strategy. The aircraft, which entered service with the airline in December 2025, is designed for long-range transatlantic missions and allows American to open thinner routes, extend seasonal flying and add capacity where demand is strongest.
From next month, the type will also be deployed on new service from New York JFK to Edinburgh, as well as selected U.S. transcontinental routes, including JFK–Los Angeles, JFK–San Francisco and Boston–Los Angeles.
As American approaches its centennial in 2026, the planned Porto launch underscores the carrier’s intent to keep expanding internationally while pairing new destinations with an increasingly premium onboard experience.
