American Airlines rules out merger with United, cites competition concerns

Share

American Airlines has firmly rejected any possibility of a merger with United Airlines, stating it is neither engaged in nor interested in such discussions.

In a statement released April 17, the carrier said a combination between the two airlines would be harmful to competition and consumers, and would not align with U.S. antitrust principles.

The airline also acknowledged support from the administration of Donald Trump, emphasising ongoing cooperation with policymakers on efforts to strengthen the aviation sector.

While noting that broader changes in the airline industry may be needed, American Airlines stressed that its priority remains executing its own long-term strategy independently, rather than pursuing consolidation with a major rival.

Bottom line: The statement appears aimed at quashing market speculation, with American Airlines positioning itself against large-scale consolidation on competition grounds while reinforcing its standalone strategy.
