American Airlines has unveiled its first international route to be operated by the new Airbus A321XLR, with seasonal nonstop service between New York (JFK) and Edinburgh (EDI) launching March 8, 2026. The service will run through October 24, 2026, marking American’s second route to the Scottish capital following the success of its Philadelphia–Edinburgh flights.
The A321XLR, the first of its kind operated by a U.S. airline, introduces a new era of trans-Atlantic efficiency and comfort. The aircraft features 20 Flagship Suite® seats, 12 Premium Economy seats, and 123 Main Cabin seats, all equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi, seatback entertainment with Bluetooth connectivity, and wireless charging.
“With the game-changing Airbus A321XLR now in our fleet, we could not be more excited to connect the Big Apple with Auld Reekie,” said Brian Znotins, Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning at American Airlines. “This is the right aircraft to open this route, offering an elevated premium experience for travelers to enjoy.”
The new service complements American’s growing European network, becoming the airline’s seventh new trans-Atlantic route for summer 2026, alongside new services to Budapest and Prague.
Tickets for the New York–Edinburgh route will go on sale 3 November 2025 via aa.com and the American Airlines mobile app.
American’s A321XLR will first enter service domestically between New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX) on 18 December 2025, before expanding to international operations in March 2026.
With its extended range and enhanced comfort, the A321XLR enables American Airlines to open new long-haul routes while offering a premium onboard experience — from lie-flat Flagship Suite® seats to curated hot meals and complimentary beverages in all cabins.
The New York–Edinburgh launch cements American’s position as one of the fastest-growing U.S. carriers across the Atlantic, expanding access to Europe and the Middle East ahead of summer 2026.
