Passengers on American Airlines flight AA780 from Philadelphia to Naples on 2 June were unexpectedly diverted to Rome after the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner N837AN was deemed too large to land at Naples Airport.
The airline typically uses a smaller 787-8 for this route. After landing in Rome, travellers were bused approximately 225 km (140 miles) to Naples—a journey of about three hours.
American Airlines cited “operational limitations” and apologised for the disruption.
