American Airlines jet diverts to Washington Dulles after passenger’s device catches fire mid-flight

Share

American Airlines flight AA357 from Philadelphia to Phoenix (Airbus A321 registered N558UW) was forced to make an emergency landing at Washington Dulles International Airport on Saturday after a passenger’s electronic device caught fire and produced smoke.

Crew members quickly contained the device before landing, and emergency teams safely evacuated the 160 passengers and six crew on board. Some passengers reported smelling smoke and coughing during the incident.

The airline did not specify what type of device ignited. All passengers were rebooked on alternative flights, and the plane involved was positioned back to Phoenix.

The FAA is investigating the cause of the fire.
