An American Airlines flight from Orlando to Phoenix diverted in an emergency on Sunday after crew members reported a strange odour in both the flight deck and the cabin, officials confirmed.
Flight AA2118, operated by Airbus A321 registered N139AN, landed safely at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, where it was met by medical teams and firefighters. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the crew reported detecting fumes mid-flight, prompting the unscheduled landing.
After the aircraft was evacuated, four flight attendants and one passenger were transported to a local hospital as a precaution, American Airlines said. Their symptoms and current conditions have not been disclosed, and no serious injuries have been reported.
The airline did not specify the source of the odour, but said maintenance teams have been inspecting the aircraft to determine the cause.
The remaining passengers and crew were transferred to another aircraft (Airbus A321 registered N183UW) to complete their journey to Phoenix, where they arrived with a delay of three hours.
