Alaska Airlines has inaugurated its first nonstop transatlantic route, launching a historic direct connection between Seattle and Rome as it officially enters the European market.
The new seasonal service, operating daily between Seattle–Tacoma International Airport and Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport, began on April 28 and will run through October 23. It represents the first-ever scheduled nonstop link between the two cities and positions Seattle as a growing international gateway for the airline.
The route is operated by the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and introduces Alaska’s new long-haul business class “Suites” product, featuring lie-flat seating, upgraded dining, and enhanced onboard amenities tailored for intercontinental travel.
Beyond passenger traffic, the service also strengthens cargo connectivity, making Alaska the first U.S. passenger airline to offer daily nonstop cargo flights between the Pacific Northwest and Italy.
Strategically, the Rome launch opens one of Seattle’s largest previously unserved long-haul markets and enhances connectivity across Alaska’s broader network. The airline highlighted improved one-stop links between Europe and Hawaii via Seattle, targeting both leisure and business travellers.
The move marks a significant milestone in Alaska Airlines’ long-term growth strategy, as it expands its international footprint across Europe and Asia while investing in upgraded onboard products and digital connectivity, including future fleet-wide deployment of Starlink Wi-Fi on its widebody aircraft.
