According to Bloomberg, aircraft leasing billionaire Gediminas Žiemelis warns that rising fuel prices linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran could increase pressure on global airlines and weaken demand for aircraft capacity ahead of the summer season.
Žiemelis, founder of Avia Solutions Group, says European carriers are already showing reduced appetite for leasing additional aircraft, while uncertainty over operating costs is growing.
Brent crude has reportedly surged from around $61 to over $110 per barrel since the escalation, significantly increasing airline fuel costs, which typically account for about a quarter of operating expenses.
He warns that airlines may respond by raising ticket prices, reducing capacity, or cancelling routes if high fuel prices persist, though he remains cautiously optimistic about the sector’s long-term recovery potential.
