airBaltic has confirmed the write-off of an Airbus A220-300 (registration YL-AAO) after determining it was beyond economic repair following a fire during maintenance, marking the first known total loss of this aircraft type.
The incident occurred on June 14, 2025, during a post-maintenance ground test of the auxiliary power unit (APU). A fire, later traced to the ozone filter system, caused severe heat damage to the fuselage and wing root. An engineering assessment by Airbus concluded that repairs were not financially viable.
As a result, airBaltic recorded a €6.2 million negative financial impact, covering the aircraft write-down, associated costs, and ongoing lease obligations, partially offset by expected insurance compensation. The claim is expected to be settled by mid-2026, after which the aircraft will be handed over to the insurer.
Despite the loss, airBaltic remains the largest operator of the A220-300 globally, with 51 aircraft in active service at the end of 2025. The airline continues its fleet expansion, with additional deliveries planned through 2026.
