airBaltic concentrates summer 2027 network on Riga as restructuring takes shape

Share

airBaltic has unveiled its summer 2027 schedule, providing the clearest indication yet of how the Latvian carrier’s recently announced restructuring will reshape its network. Riga will dominate the operation with 57 direct destinations, compared with 13 from Tallinn and only eight from Vilnius, while frequencies will increase substantially on a number of stronger routes.

The programme, running from late March until late October 2027, implements airBaltic’s new demand-driven strategy following the major revision of its business plan announced in August.

Under that plan, the airline has abandoned its previous emphasis on rapid expansion and a fleet potentially reaching 100 aircraft in favour of what management describes as “financial stability first, growth second“.

Riga is now unequivocally airBaltic’s primary hub. Tallinn and Vilnius will complement it with selected point-to-point services.

The airline is also restructuring its Riga timetable to improve connection times, reinforcing the Latvian capital’s role as a transfer hub between destinations across the network.

Fewer thin routes, more frequencies

Rather than pursuing the maximum possible number of destinations, airBaltic says it will concentrate capacity on markets offering the strongest demand and revenue potential.

The summer programme illustrates the strategy particularly clearly.

London Gatwick will receive up to 14 weekly flights from Riga, while Paris and Vienna increase to 12 weekly. Barcelona, Rome, Hamburg and Düsseldorf will be served daily, Milan six times weekly and Athens and Nice four times weekly.

Alicante and Split increase to three weekly flights.

The strategy therefore represents more than straightforward contraction: airBaltic is withdrawing capacity from weaker markets and concentrating it on routes where it expects stronger returns.

Vilnius operation sharply focused

The distribution of destinations among the three Baltic capitals also demonstrates the increasing concentration on Riga.

airBaltic will offer 57 direct destinations from Riga and 13 from Tallinn, but just eight from Vilnius.

The Vilnius network will consist of Amsterdam, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Lisbon, Munich, Paris, Riga and Tallinn.

The relatively small Lithuanian operation follows a series of route and frequency reductions announced during 2026 and confirms that Vilnius will have a substantially more selective role within the future airBaltic network.

Tallinn retains direct services to 13 destinations, including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, London Gatwick, Munich, Paris and Vienna, in addition to Riga and Vilnius.

Smaller fleet, concentrated network

The programme should also be viewed against airBaltic’s dramatic fleet restructuring.

The airline announced in August that it expects to reduce its Airbus A220-300 fleet from 54 aircraft to approximately 36 by the end of 2026. The fleet is then expected to grow only gradually to around 40 aircraft by 2031.

Scheduled capacity is meanwhile projected to decline from approximately 9.6 billion available seat kilometres in 2026 to 8.7 billion in 2027.

airBaltic nevertheless expects to maintain a substantial network through higher aircraft utilisation, greater concentration on profitable routes and stronger year-round ACMI partnerships with other airlines.

The contrast with the airline’s previous strategy is considerable. Before its planned IPO was postponed, airBaltic envisaged continued network expansion and eventually operating around 100 aircraft.

Its revised strategy instead concentrates on repairing the balance sheet, lowering costs and improving profitability before considering significant renewed growth.

The summer 2027 programme is therefore the first clear demonstration of what the new airBaltic will look like: smaller, more Riga-centric and considerably more selective about where it deploys its aircraft, but with higher frequencies on the routes it considers commercially strongest.
