AirAsia X launches Kuala Lumpur–Bahrain–London route, names Bahrain first global hub

AirAsia X (AAX) has unveiled a major expansion of its long-haul network with the launch of a new Kuala Lumpur–Bahrain–London Gatwick (KUL-BAH-LGW) service, positioning Bahrain as its first strategic hub outside Asia.

Announced in Manama, the route will commence on 26 June 2026 and represents AAX’s second Fifth Freedom operation, enabling the airline to carry passengers between Bahrain and London independently of its Kuala Lumpur base. The move marks a significant step in AAX’s ambition to expand beyond Asia and compete in the global low-cost long-haul market.

The new service links Kuala Lumpur, Bahrain, and London, with operations into London Gatwick Airport. Bahrain will function as a transit hub connecting Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, leveraging its geographic location and aviation infrastructure to support multi-sector connectivity and partnerships.

Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A and advisor to AAX, described the move as a “defining step” in the airline’s growth strategy, highlighting opportunities not only for passenger traffic but also for cargo and maintenance services within the broader Capital A ecosystem. The announcement coincided with the first Bahrain arrival of Teleport, Capital A’s logistics arm, following a recent USD50 million capital raise.

Bahraini officials welcomed the investment, noting its expected economic impact across aviation, tourism, logistics, and employment, while reinforcing the Kingdom’s positioning as a regional connectivity hub.

AAX will deploy its Airbus A330 fleet on the new route, extending affordable long-haul access from its Kuala Lumpur gateway—currently serving 95 destinations across 23 Asian countries—to Europe via Bahrain. The service also enhances connectivity for travellers from Australia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Japan.

To mark the launch, AAX introduced promotional one-way fares starting from RM99 to Bahrain and RM199 to London, with premium flatbed fares from RM2,999. The introductory sale runs until 22 February 2026 for travel between 26 June and 30 November 2026.

With this development, AirAsia X strengthens its position in the evolving low-cost long-haul segment while establishing Bahrain as its first operational bridge between Asia and Europe.
