Malaysia’s AirAsia has placed a landmark order for 150 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, the largest single firm order for the A220 programme, pushing total orders beyond 1,000 units and highlighting strong global demand for the type.
Announced in Mirabel, Canada, the deal makes AirAsia a new A220 customer and the launch operator of a higher-capacity 160-seat configuration, enabled by additional overwing exits. The aircraft will complement AirAsia’s existing Airbus fleet and support expansion across ASEAN and Central Asia, while allowing larger aircraft to be redeployed to longer routes.
AirAsia leadership described the order as a strategic move to unlock new markets and build a broader low-cost network, while Airbus emphasised the A220’s efficiency, range, and suitability for the airline’s evolving network strategy.
The A220, which can carry 100–160 passengers over distances up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km), had delivered 501 units to 25 operators as of March 2026. The aircraft is already capable of operating with up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel, with Airbus targeting 100% SAF capability by 2030.
