Air Niugini has placed a firm order for two additional Airbus A220-100s, adding to its initial 2023 order for six of the same model. The airline also has three A220-300s on lease from U.S. lessor Azorra, as it builds a modern, fuel-efficient fleet to serve domestic and regional routes.
The announcement coincides with the final assembly of Air Niugini’s first A220 at Airbus’s Mirabel facility in Canada. CEO Gary Seddon emphasised the A220’s role in supporting Papua New Guinea’s economic development and meeting growing passenger demand.
Airbus highlighted the A220’s 25% lower fuel consumption, spacious cabin, and range of up to 3,600 nautical miles, powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines. The aircraft can operate with up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with full 100% SAF capability targeted by 2030.
As of April 2025, over 900 A220s have been ordered by more than 30 customers, with 410+ delivered and 24 airlines currently operating the type on over 1,600 routes globally.
