To mark 85 years of proud aviation history, Air New Zealand has revealed its fully redesigned Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner — the first complete nose-to-tail retrofit of its kind globally. From Wednesday 7 May, customers can book flights aboard this aircraft, which promises to redefine the future of long-haul travel.
The retrofitted Dreamliner, registration ZK-NZH, is currently in Auckland undergoing final testing before its maiden commercial flight on Monday 19 May from Auckland to Brisbane. That same evening, the aircraft will embark on its first long-haul journey, connecting Auckland with San Francisco.
“This is a truly special moment in our history,” said Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran. “This aircraft spent 184 days in Singapore being transformed, the culmination of years of innovation, customer feedback, and cutting-edge design. It’s the first time we’ve introduced a completely new onboard product in over 15 years — and we’ve done it by honouring our Kiwi identity and customer expectations.”
From texture and layout to technology and comfort, every element of the new cabin was designed with passenger experience in mind, inspired by the spirit and beauty of Aotearoa New Zealand. The airline plans to retrofit a total of seven aircraft by the end of 2025, with all 14 Boeing 787-9s expected to be upgraded by the end of 2026.
The refreshed Dreamliners will initially serve routes including Auckland–Brisbane, Auckland–San Francisco, Auckland–Vancouver, and Auckland–Rarotonga, with more destinations to follow.
